7/4/20 - Happy Tuesday! University Inspired Writing Prompts

Today, 7/4/20, is the next instalment of University Inspired Writing Prompts. Since my first year at university, I have been compiling a collection of writing prompts inspired by my time studying in Derby. I hope that these prompts help you create your own works!

All of these prompts are dialogue based, and are inspired by real conversations I have been part of whilst at university.

Today is especially special as it marks the fiftieth week that I have shared a writing prompt inspired by my university experience! I'm so glad that this segment has been around for so long, I really enjoy sharing these quote prompts with you all! 

PROMPT #50:

"Someone just sent a glass of milk to our table? Do we have to pay for this?"

I'm sure many of you have heard of the joke of posting your table number and location on social media in order to get friends and followers to order food and drink for you at establishments like Wetherspoons. However, this wasn't one of those scenarios.

This actually happened on New Year's Eve. My friends and I were out at a Wagamamas celebrating a friend's 21st birthday before the night transitioned into a New Year's party. While we were waiting for our meals, a server came over with our drinks, which were varied, especially in such a large group. However, there was one drink which didn't belong on our table: a half-pint glass of milk, which had been ordered to our table by someone that was not us. 

Another patron at the restaurant had ordered us this milk, and billed our table for the milk! It was madness!

31/3/20 - Happy Tuesday! University Inspired Writing Prompt!

Today, 31/3/20, is the next instalment of University Inspired Writing Prompts. Since my first year at university, I have been compiling a collection of writing prompts inspired by my time studying in Derby. I hope that these prompts help you create your own works!

All of these prompts are dialogue based, and are inspired by real conversations I have been part of whilst at university.

PROMPT #49:

"The bitch just poured red wine into a bedazzled Starbucks cup and I have never felt more envious of someone’s lifestyle choices before!"

The above quote was something that I had said, recalling some of the events of what happened after a day at Comic Con. I had been listing off the most bizarre, yet on brand things that my social circle and I had managed to end up involved with during that evening and thus ended up mentioning the antics of one of my friends attempting to be subtle by pouring their alcohol into a reusable cup! 

When they did it initially, all of us had been completely dumbfounded by the ingeniousness. It was a fantastic idea, and what made it more apt was that the cup was covered in silver dimonte crystals! An amazing choice!

24/3/20 - Happy Tuesday! University Inspired Writing Prompt!

Today, 24/3/20, is the next instalment of University Inspired Writing Prompts. Since my first year at university, I have been compiling a collection of writing prompts inspired by my time studying in Derby. I hope that these prompts help you create your own works!

All of these prompts are dialogue based, and are inspired by real conversations I have been part of whilst at university.

PROMPT #48:

"Why is your house full of flamingos?"

This was a question posed by a new friend upon visiting my house during the second year I was at university. Due to them not being very close with me at the time, they were, in no way, familiar with the characters from my stories or the inside jokes which had ensued consequently. For example, my character Floyd Daniels from the Neon Series, was known under the username Mr FlaminGO, which was a reference to the bright pink dye he had put on his hair before he was arrested for a crime he didn't commit at the start of the series. The joke about flamingos, and my favouritism toward him meant I was often gifted home-ware with a flamingo motif, from candles, to mugs, to garden ornaments.

During my second year, a garden flamingo whom we'd named Floyd in my character's honour, had been placed beside the fireplace, as a nod to an inside joke about him being set on fire. However, with my friend not knowing any of this information, they came in and just saw a living room filled with flamingo stuff. It was very funny to me and my housemates, who were all in on the joke.

17/3/20 - Happy Tuesday! University Inspired Writing Prompt

Today, 17/3/20, is the next instalment of University Inspired Writing Prompts. Since my first year at university, I have been compiling a collection of writing prompts inspired by my time studying in Derby. I hope that these prompts help you create your own works!

All of these prompts are dialogue based, and are inspired by real conversations I have been part of whilst at university.

PROMPT #47:

"I have exactly 37 pairs of novelty sunglasses and none of them appear to be apt enough for this scenario"

      "Can I have the sparkly parrot ones anyways?"
"Absolutely!"

The above conversation took place during the summer of my first year of university, where I participated in a volunteering event at a local school. Two of my friends and I were running a "Smash The Crockery" stand at the school's summer fete as we were deemed responsible enough to take care of children's health and safety, whilst there being enough of us to prepare, clean and maintain the stall. Due to its nature, it was relatively popular. 

However, toward the end of the fete, we were in a scenario where we were trying to capture the children's attention as they were rushing for one last go on the bouncy castle before it was deflated. In order to do so, we decided amongst ourselves to wear some of the novelty sunglasses I had brought with me in a tote bag. But attracting children's attention proved harder than we had anticipated, and thus, we kept having to change it up.

10/3/20 - Happy Tuesday! University Inspired Writing Prompt

Today, 10/3/20, is the next instalment of University Inspired Writing Prompts. Since my first year at university, I have been compiling a collection of writing prompts inspired by my time studying in Derby. I hope that these prompts help you create your own works!

PROMPT #46:

"I swear students like bubbles and glow sticks more than little kids!"

The above quote is one said at Comic Con when I had provided small tubes of bubble mixture. I was hanging out with the same friends whom I had provided glow sticks for at a previous social event, and at New Years' Eve. The bubbles were more of a hit this time around due to the weather, and the fact it was still light outside by the time I had to leave, and thus, bringing glow sticks would have proven redundant. 

My friends all appeared to enjoy the bubbles, especially as we started to drink. It was a lot of fun!

Today, 3/3/20, is the next instalment of University Inspired Writing Prompts. Since my first year at university, I have been compiling a collection of writing prompts inspired by my time studying in Derby. I hope that these prompts help you create your own works!

All of these prompts are dialogue based, and are inspired by real conversations I have been part of whilst at university.

PROMPT #45:

"My best friend has found a clone of one of our other friends. He's been at her uni with her for three years. She never managed to get a photo of him. She just sent her housemate to try because their last lecture tomorrow and the clone is outside Starbucks."

The above is based upon a genuine experience that myself and my friends had. With myself and the majority of my social circle attending different universities, jotted around the country, we would constantly see faces in our peripheral vision that would instantly make us think of the friends we left in our hometown. Often, we would share the fact we'd seen clones of each other in our group chat. 

This was a more dramatic example, where one of my friends refused to accept the fact that there was another person that looked like him and insisted that we provide a photo in the spirit of "pics or it didn't happen" but social anxiety prevented my friend to turn to this stranger and tell him that she wanted a selfie with him, solely to show a friend that they looked alike. It would just be too weird! 

And thus, she sent the housemate to try and take a sneaky photo... It was apparently too blurry to be identifiable.

PROMPT #44:

" I wasn’t ID’ed at the grocery store for all this alcohol because I was dressed up as a character from a 90’s cartoon and the cashier said if I was old enough to know who she was I was definitely old enough to be buying vodka… I’m 19, I just have siblings, dammit!"

The above is a quote from one of my friends, who had joined me on our way to a costume party. In order to be prepared for the events that would be coming during the night, we decided it would be best to buy some alcohol at the local Co-Op. We ended up leaving the shop at different times, me leaving first while she made a decision about whether she wanted to buy vodka and mixers or gin. 

Who needs the No ID No Sale rule when you're dressed like a cartoon from the 1990's?

PROMPT #43:

"Our table isn’t big enough for all of this alcohol. Hold my cider, I’ll grab the ironing board."

      "Oh my god the boy’s a genius!" 

The above was something which happened to take place at a friend's birthday party. Due to us deciding to hold a party for almost twenty people in a space only designed for four people, we ended up very much over capacity. Therefore, we had to improvise when attempting to make enough space for all of us to have our alcohol out, as it was getting spilt by us all holding it. My friend, Matt, managed to come up with the clever idea of producing an ironing board from behind the sofa and setting it up so we could use that to hold all of the bottles of vodka our party had accumulated.

PROMPT #42:

"Guess who used OTP fanart as a bookmark for a library book and returned it to university yesterday!"

The above is a genuine plight that I had. When I was in my final year at university, I had been struggling to multitask doing all of the required reading for my dissertation. I ended up having a frantic day, after maxing out the amount of time I could renew a library loan online, where I was skim reading as much reading as I could in one go, using anything I could as a bookmark. This included receipts, scrap paper, a notebook, a sheet of stickers, an old envelope which had had a parcel in it, and surprisingly, a piece of fanart of my OTP that I had purchased at comic con. 

Due to feeling poorly, I was unable to return the books to uni directly, and instead, tasked my housemate, and friend to do so for me. She noticed a protruding receipt from one book, but not the lilac background of the art, and I ended up realising that the drawing was missing and had to rush to university the next day and retrieve the book from the shelf, art in tow, and smuggle the drawing out of the library without anyone noticing. 

To say my friends and I were amused by my predicament would have been an understatement!

Today, 4/2/20, is the next instalment of University Inspired Writing Prompts. Since my first year at university, I have been compiling a collection of writing prompts inspired by my time studying in Derby. I hope that these prompts help you create your own works!

PROMPT #41:

"Let’s get drunk and watch Scooby Doo 2"

      "Is that the bodyswap one?"
"I don’t know, is that the first or the second?"
"I have absolutely no idea!"
"Shit, you guys, looks like we’re getting drunk and watching BOTH live action Scooby Doo movies!"

The above is a conversation that took place at my friend's 25th birthday party. For that event, myself and about fifteen other friends of his had crammed into a hotel-apartment that was only supposed to house four people, to celebrate our friend's birthday. Due to us arriving quite early in the afternoon, because of miserable weather, we had settled down, sat on the floor and the sofas alike, and began to channel surf. In the end we found a film channel, one which had the second Scooby Doo film on, and a Plus One channel which was still playing the first.

" I hate the commute to class, I’m so hungry and tired. If my rail replacement bus doesn’t line up with the connection that takes me the rest of the way to the city, I will EAT THE DAMNED BUS"

This is a quote from one of my classmates' when we were on our way to university. She was, unfortunately, a bit farther behind us than she would have liked and thus, was likely to miss out on breakfast. My friends and I happened to be quite amused by how she had articulated herself. Then again, 9am lectures do happen to bring out the best and worst in people!

"My mum got me a calendar filled with photos of my dog because she was sick of answering my video calls to see him" 

The above was genuinely something my mum did for my sister and I. As she was so stressed and tired from work, what she hated was having to answer a series of video calls every other night from my younger sister and I, in bad moods, desperate to see our dog in order to make us feel better. She decided that the least cost-effective means of making us stop calling her was to buy us each a small puppy calendar, filled with photos of our dog.

PROMPT #38:

"What is a blue raspberry?"

The above is actually a quote from one of my colleagues from my former job at a theme park. On the last day of High-Season, where the majority of local schools had resumed, the staff had been allowed long, interlocked breaks. This meant that I ended up on an hour-long break in the company of not one, not two, but six of my colleagues from the same department, who had been sent on break within ten minutes of each other.

Before I had joined them, my friends and colleagues had played several of the arcade games, something staff were, generally, not allowed to do, as it meant that the large volume of guests were unable to do so. However, as the arcade was desolate, they had been allowed to purchase games. I had joined them with a tray of doughnuts and a slushie. It evoked ar ather strange conversation that led to a colleague asking the above question, leaving the rest of us flabbergasted

"Drinking cocktails is like Russian Roulette, you’ll never know when its hit you. Unless you’re you, who gets a hangover after a cider"

The above is a quote from my friends from when we went out for drinks. One of our group was significantly more of a lightweight than the rest of us and when we were ordering pitchers to share we commented on their capacity to drink and whether it was a good idea.

They, as expected, got very drunk and disappeared for a while, sending cryptic videos to the group chat from around the surrounding space, When they came back they were saying that they might be the slightest bit tispy!

24/12/19 - Happy Tuesday! University Inspired Writing Prompt!

PROMPT #35:

1.     "I swear if I see another worm on a string meme I’ll cry – oh my GOD that girl has attached one to her fishnets, YOU GO GIRL, WORM ON A STRING"

     

      The above is a quote from someone I heard at after MCM London Comic Con across from our group, who were chilling out with a some bubbles, glow sticks, cider, fizzy and music by the Thames. For some reason or another, several of our friends had brought varying coloured worms on strings with them to the convention. 

      Liv, one of our friends, decided that for the sake of a meme, she would attach one to her tights, and run around. This stranger had, most likely, heard us shrieking about the memes as more and more worms on a string appeared. Their opinion seemed to change upon seeing Liv with the worm following her around!

17/12/19 - Happy Tuesday! University Inspired Writing Prompt:

Today, 17/12/19, is the next instalment of University Inspired Writing Prompts. Since my first year at university, I have been compiling a collection of writing prompts inspired by my time studying in Derby. I hope that these prompts help you create your own works!

PROMPT #34:

"I ran into a uni friend at the theatre, on the other side of the country!"

The above was a text that I sent a friend when I was at Hamilton with my mother, grandmother and aunt. During the intermission I had gone to purchase a programme after being told my mother would go with me to Stage Door afterwards and as I settled back down to my seat, I was tapped on the shoulder and saw my friend Sile!

      Sile and I had been friends for two years, both of us being spoken word poets and being members of the 2018 Derby Unislam team! It was really shocking to see her there as she doesn't live in the area! It was really nice to see her, and I hope she thought the same seeing me, since she was the one who ran after me to say hello.

PROMPT #32:

"I’ve had five shots of espresso in the last hour, is this Nirvana or death, because I feel like I’m about to explode"

The above is something I said at work. Due to rail replacement busses impairing my route, I was unable to get a coffee before work and ended up having two iced coffees in a short window, one with a standard double espresso shot in it, the other with a triple, which I paid extra for. Let's just say, all five shots hit me at once!

PROMPT #30:

" I never thought I’d see the creation of Adam from the Sistine Chapel being drunkenly rein acted on a slide with a pair of sliders"

This prompt is based on drunken shennanigans that took place during the Easter Holidays at a friend's 25th birthday party. After a lot to drink my friends and I had retreated to a nearby park to be rid of excess energy. During that time, several people in our group climbed up on top of one of those blue and orange sheltered circular benches. My friend Maya struggled to do so, so they took off their sliders, passing them to one of the other members of the party, and had to have the shoes passed back to them in a manner which, to all of us, screamed Sistine Chapel.

PROMPT #29:

"I thought my flatmates were having a domestic but they were just playing Mario Kart"

This was a quote from a friend's flatmate. We were at her house to celebrate her birthday for a chilled out night-in with pizza, alcohol and video games. One of her flatmates hadn't gone into the kitchen and realised that she had guests and believed that all of the incoherent shouting from the kitchen/living room was a fight between two of his housemates, who were in a relationship. Instead it was us playing video games, and once he'd laughed at himself, he produced his own controllers and set up Super Smash Bros. We played it over pizza until we nearly missed the last train home!

Today, 12/11/19, is the next instalment of University Inspired Writing Prompts. Since my first year at university, I have been compiling a collection of writing prompts inspired by my time studying in Derby. I hope that these prompts help you create your own works!

PROMPT #28:

" My lecturer just asked me if I was okay on the one day I didn’t come to class in red lipstick and winged eyeliner."

This was a genuine thing that happened to me, even though I cannot be certain my lack of makeup was what provoked his concern, it wouldn't have surprised me, as the general consensus, students and lecturers alike was that if I wasn't wearing my red lipstick especially, there was probably something wrong as I was constantly reapplying it. The fact that my lack of a statement red lip potentially evoked lecturer's to be concerned amused me immensely and thus I thought I would share
